Position Summary:

The Safety Manager is responsible to ensure that a culture of health and safety is created throughout all levels of the organization. 
This position ensures the safe and efficient operations of Deschutes Brewery through the development and execution of health and safety programs/policies, by providing training, evaluation of risk, and the adherence to all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
A high degree of initiative and leadership is required to engage the entire workforce in maintaining a safe work environment.  

Position Responsibilities:

  • Assists, plans and implements safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal rules.

  • Demonstrated understanding of the rules and regulations including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Department of Transportation (DOT).

  • Advises HR Director and Operations management on safety compliance concerns and preventative actions.

  • Manage workers compensation claims in conjunction with insurance providers.

  • Manage return to work procedures.

  • Work with local Fire and City inspectors to ensure compliance with local rules and manages all systems testing fire, announcement, backflow, fire extinguisher, etc.  

  • Manages/coordinates hearing conservation evaluation program

  • Plans and implements training for employees in safety practices.

  • Maintains safety files and records with a high degree of confidentiality.

  • Performs safety surveys and inspections, prepares written reports of findings and recommendations for corrective or preventive measures where indicated, and follows up to ensure measures have been implemented.

  • Conducts post-accident investigation and prepares report identifying possible accident causes and hazards for use by company personnel and senior management.

  • Assists in the development, evaluation and upgrading of safety programs, and ensures that the organization is following industry best practices.

  • Prefer experience in OSHA, MSHA, DOT and EPA regulatory requirements.

  • Provides leadership to safety committees.

  • Excellent computer, communication and training skills.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education & Experience:  

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Industrial Safety, or a related field is preferred

  • Professional certification (ASP, CSP, or other) is desirable.

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment in a safety related role such as safety manager, safety coordinator, etc.

  • Extensive knowledge of OSHA requirements and regulations.

  • Excellent organizational, written and verbal communication

  • Solid working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

  • Strong ability to influence and problem solve.
