The Packaging Assistant Manager, Canning will lead the Canning Department in the following areas: daily operations, employee development, material ordering and management, technical knowledge, product quality and safety. S/he will also provide engineering support, departmental planning, staffing and logistics. This person will play an instrumental role the project planning and development of the new canning line.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Role model for teammates in the following areas: attendance, conduct, work ethic, accountability, quality of work, professionalism, and safety.
  • Perform the responsibilities of a level 3 canning operator including opening and closing duties as needed.
  • Coordinate and manage day to day operations such as employee scheduling, product scheduling, required materials and department efficiency. Enlist assistance of teammates per their specific skill sets.
  • Coordinate and manage all technical needs for canning department.
  • Coordinate maintenance/rebuild duties with maintenance and canning personnel.
  • Play an essential role in any future changes or expansions both in Bend and East Coast
  • Manage all purchase orders for the department. Develop a schedule for materials ordering. Assign responsibilities for inventory counts and help reduce discrepancies.
  • Lead inquiries into product quality issues, place product on hold, investigate non-conformities, and put measures into place to help prevent reoccurrences.
  • Maintain/Develop active relationship with current and new vendors and suppliers always searching out better options to help the canning department maintain superior product quality within a reasonable budget.
  • Coach and mentor staff, create opportunities for team development, make hiring decisions, and drive performance management and recognition.
  • Ensure employees to complete tasks in a timely manner while maintaining safe operating standards.
  • Ensure department is appropriately supplied and staffed to meet current and future production requirements.
  • Ensure department maintains Deschutes Brewery's commitment to a consistent and quality product.
  • Create and maintain a plan for equipment P.M.s to provide customers with a superior product while maintaining efficiency at or above goals.
  • Assist with meeting quarterly and annual goals, in support of our strategic plan.

Position Requirements:

  • Two-year college degree preferred.
  • Advanced Canning knowledge and training.
  • Mechanical experience is preferred, including the ability to understand machine process, trouble-shoot, and solve.
  • Must have the ability to coordinate and manage current and future projects by gathering data and other resources to meet set deadlines.
  • Must be able to work flexible schedule.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills that inspire and build trust resulting in effective working relationships across the company.
  • Strong computer skills, specifically MS Suite.
